DIY Fashion Statement Rings

Updated on December 20, 2011

Big fancy rings, also known as statement rings, are really in style lately. I am seeing these large, stylish rings everywhere.. From Swavorski crystals to big stones, gems and charms they are adorned with all sorts of shiny, pretty things! How much do they cost, though? Some are fairly priced but sometimes the price can be a bit much... How would you love to make your own big fancy ring or statement ring? They are totally easy and YOU get to choose what you want your ring to look like. You can make these rings out of anything you want.. all you need is some ring blanks, good glue and a pretty embellishment for your ring. It's pretty much that simple. Let's get started.

What You Will Need

  • Ring Blanks
  • Glue-- I recommend E6000.
  • Embellishments for your rings--Keep reading for some great ideas!

This is a really easy project.. You basically take your embellishment and glue it on the ring blank. You can get ring blanks online in bulk at craft supply sites like etsy, artfire and artbeads. You just go and do a search for ring blanks and it will bring up several to choose from. You want a decent sized circle on top of the ring so your embellishment can get a good stick. The ring blanks come in all sorts of colors.. gunmetal, silver plated, antiqued bronze, copper etc. Pick which one that will match your embellishments and it's that easy. I buy in bulk because I wanted to make several and am hoping to eventually sell them.

So once you have your ring blanks, just glue on your embellishments following the directions on your glue. I use E6000 and just put a decent amount on the ring blank and then stick it onto the embellishment and let it dry for 24 hours. E6000 is great for this.

The better part of this hub will be ideas for your rings.   Maybe you can't decide what you want your ring to look like or maybe you don't want it quite so big..  Some of the rings I've made are large and some are medium sized but I wanted to share them with you.  I'm hoping it will inspire you and help give you some ideas for your own.

Antique Jewelry and Buttons

Here is a ring made from an antique brooch. I just took the pin off the back and sanded down some metal parts that remained and glued it to a ring blank. It turned out so pretty..

Rings made from 1/2 tiles from Lowe's

Tiles

These were made from a sample pack of 1/2 inch bathroom tiles I bought at Lowe's. I just covered the black one with glitter all over and the pink one was made by putting glitter on the back of it so the glitter would show through the glass. I am anxious to make some of these with some one inch tiles...and maybe glue some art work and cover with resin.

Resin With Glitter

I made the hearts by pouring resin into a mold and mixing glitter into one and then candy sprinkles into the other.

The square one was made by pouring resin on a square piece of wood and then covering with glitter and then giving it one final coat of resin.   If you are interested in learning how to work with resin and maybe make some of these, go here to see my hub on resin.

Bottle Cap Rings

Bottle Caps

Instead of using this cap as a pendant like I usually do, I just glued it onto the ring blank and wallah!! A very cute ring... If you are interested in learning how to make this ring just see my tutorials here  and here but don't worry about adding a bail or jump ring.

Play Doh Roses

My super talented daughter makes these play-doh roses and I am so amazed at how beautiful and realistic they are. I just added the glitter and glued them on ring blanks. So pretty... and I am so proud of my daughter for making these beautiful roses! I may soon have a tutorial on how to make play-doh roses.. Let me know if you would be interested in that!

Empty Eyeshadow Trays

You know those empty metal eye shadow trays you throw away when your eyeshadow is gone? Save them!! I found out they make great bezels! The finished one was made by pouring resin over dark green seed beads. For the other two, I printed some art work and mod podged it into the tray and added some resin. I have to add one more layer of resin and add the ring blanks and then they will be finished. I think they are going to be really really cute!

Other Great Ideas!!!

You really can make these rings from anything you want! Some other things I have been thinking about are earrings you have lost a match to, scrabble tiles, big gem stones, game pieces, beads, flat back marbles, large sized charms or maybe a collage of charms, polymer clay, etc.. etc.. etc... The possibilities are endless! I hope I have inspired you to make some of your own big fancy rings :0)
