How to Make a Tile Pendant
The scrabble tile pendants are all the rage these days and they are pretty much what inspired me to give these other tile pendants a try. One day while shopping at Lowe's Home Improvement Store I ran across these one inch tiles and I immediately thought about how cute they would be as pendants. They are thicker and heavier than scrabble tiles but still workable in my opinion. I bought the sheet of them which was exactly 144 tiles for about 5 bucks. Initially I was concerned they would be too heavy but after making and trying one on it was okay- not feather light but not too heavy either- definitely workable. So I got to work and made some really lovely pendants out of these one inch tiles. They turned out even better than I had pictured in my mind and I am excited about them and keep making more and more! They are easy and quick, too. So I am very excited to share this tutorial with you:0)
What You Need
- One Inch Tiles (not too heavy)
- Dremel With Sand Barrel Attachment
- Paint (optional)
- Art or Picture for Pendant
- Mod Podge
- Bail
- E6000 Glue
Step One
Take your one inch tile and sand the top of it to make rough. My tiles had a sort of coating on it and I really had to sand it to get the coating off. Once you have it sanded really well it is time to paint the tile if you choose to paint it. You may want it to stay natural instead of painting but I painted mine. Also you can round the corners or leave them square. I rounded a few of mine.
Step Two
Once you have it sanded and painted it's time to cut out your art or image to put on the tile. You can choose to cover the entire tile or you can cut the image slightly smaller than the square to show a little bit of border around the image. This is how I chose to do mine. If you choose to cover the whole top of the tile a good thing to do is just lay the tile down and trace around the image and then cut. If you want to leave a little bit of a border just trace the tile and then carefully trim the edges a bit until you have the image the size you want and the borders the size you want. Once you have it the size you want put some mod podge on the back of the image and stick it on the square tile.
Step Three
Once you have the image mounted on the tile exactly how you want it and the mod podge beneath is dry (doesn't take long) You will then need to take your mod podge and go over the top of the image and tile completely about three times. This seals the image in place and will help protect it. Also go around the whole tile with the mod podge and this will seal it and help protect it.
** At this point you could put some other sort of sealer like resin or diamond glaze over the tile but I chose to stop at Mod Podge because they looked great and being tile you don't want to put any unnecessary weight on them.
Step Four
Now grab your glue and attach your bail to the back of the tile. After it's dry add a cord and you now you have a beautiful tile pendant necklace!
NOTE: These tiles are water-resistant but NOT water proof! It is suggested to take the pendant off while bathing or taking a shower as excessive contact with water could cause damage.
