How To Make Singed Fabric Flowers

This is a simple tutorial to show you how to make singed flowers from fabric. This is a good way to use those fabric scraps you didn't know what to do with! These singed flowers are so cute and they are extremely easy to make. This is what you will need:

• Fabric (organza or a similar type fabric-synthetics work well)
• Lighter or candle
• Needle and thread
• Bead, button or embellishment

Step One: First thing you need to do is cut circles out of the fabric. Just cut several circles of different sizes.

Step Two: After cutting the circles you will need to singe the edges. You do this with a candle or a lighter. I preferred to use the lighter because the candle I was using left black soot on the fabric but maybe it was just a bad candle? Put the flame to the edges until they singe a bit moving all around the circle of fabric. It will cause the edges of the fabric to pucker up and it will be shaped kind of like a big contact lens.

Step Three: Once you have all of the circles singed it is time to layer them. Put bigger ones on bottom and then smaller. Two to three layers is usually enough. It's up to you. Once you have them layered, take your needle and thread and sew them together making a stitch in the middle of the flower.

Step Four: Now you can add your bead or button in the middle while you are stitching or you can stitch them together and then glue your embellishment on.. whatever is easier. Once you have added your button, bead or embellishment you are all done!

• These flowers are just gorgeous and look great as hair accessories. You can put them on alligator clips, barrettes or head bands
• You could glue a pin on the back and wear it that way or put one or several on a hat or scarf
• Make a feminine decorative wall hanging- gluing several together on a wreath or something similar
• These would make a nice gift. You could include on a bookmark or greeting card
• Use them on your scrapbook pages
• Embellish sheer curtain panels with them

I also made some of these out of wide grosgrain ribbon scraps and they turned out lovely. Grosgrain ribbon worked well with the flame and shaped really good. I added some glitter to the edges and they came out sparkling and pretty. When cutting the circles you could experiment with perfect circles and then some not so perfect (yet still round) and you could also cut ovals. Each way makes a different look. Try different fabrics too. Just play around and see what you like. I have seen a lot of these made with 3 larger seed beads in the middle and they are darling. Considering how cute they come out with such minimal time, supplies and effort it's hard not to get addicted to making them :0)
