DIY Vinyl Wall Quotes

Updated on February 20, 2012

Vinyl wall art is a beautiful touch to any room of your home but unfortunately it is a bit pricey, and I don't have a money tree growing out back! Can you relate? I decided to get creative and figure how to make some of these myself. If you have Photoshop and a printer, you can do this too! This project is so easy it will blow you away..and the end result is definitely comparable to a lot of things you can buy out there. I want to share this project so that you can see you don't have to pay a fortune for beautiful home décor. In this project I will show you how to make a quote or phrase to put on your wall. You can do shapes, too. I encourage you to get creative and see what you can come up with.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Contact paper
  • Printer Paper
  • Printer
  • Photoshop (or similar program)
  • Spray Adhesive
  • Scissors
  • Paint (optional)

STEP ONE

First thing you need to do is make the templates for the letters and I did this with Photoshop. If you are familiar with photoshop you probably don't need this tutorial- just go in and print out your letters (for your phrase or quote) in the size and font you want. But if you aren't familiar with photoshop, I have a hubpage tutorial on how to do this here but instead of gluing your paper onto chip board (like in the hubpage tutorial) we will be gluing it onto contact paper. The tutorial is basic and easy to understand. So once you have gone to the link above and printed out your letters on paper you are ready to glue them onto the contact paper.

NOTE: Please be aware that the more intricate your letters are the harder they will be to cut out so it's a good idea to stay with non-cursive fonts.. or at least simple cursive. Also, the larger they are the easier they will be to cut out.

STEP TWO

Now take your contact paper and cut it into letter sized (8.5 by 11)pieces. The amount of the pieces depends on how long your phrase will be. After cutting the 8.5 by 11 pieces, use a spray adhesive to glue each of your sheets of paper with your printed letters on them onto the contact paper sheets. Elmers craft bond spray adhesive is great to use for this because you can use it for permanent or temporary hold. Once you have the letter sheets glued to the contact sheets, it's time to cut them out.

STEP THREE

You could stop at this point if you like the look of the contact paper already. They do have some awesome patterns and colors in contact paper (online anyway) but if you only have a drab pattern or color, maybe something you just had laying around the house or left over - you can change the color. I do this with spray paint.. it covers well and evenly. Wal-mart brand works wonderfully! Black and Browns look good on light walls and white and light taupes look great on dark walls.

So, paint your letters and sit them aside to dry. After they are dry.. Just peel and stick on your wall and TADA!! You have a gorgeous vinyl wall quote!
