10 DIY Fabric Flower Projects!

By Jamie Brock

I love the look of handmade fabric flowers. They are so pretty and versatile, too! What is even better is how simple they are to make. Most do not require a whole lot of material so they are perfect for using up all those beautiful remnants that you keep holding on to but can't bare to part with. I have seen several different sizes and shapes of flowers made from fabric. They can be used as accessories for hair, clothing, hats, scarves and even for embellishing cards and scrapbooks. There are many tutorials for all kinds of fabric flowers all over the internet but I went through and picked out a few projects that I thought were the best. I am excited to share these with you!

These shirts are GORGEOUS!! Dress up a simple t-shirt with these beautiful flower embellishments! You could do a new shirt or you can use old t-shirts that may have otherwise ended up giving away or thrown in the trash :0) If I didn't know better I would have thought that these were very expensive designer shirts. In fact they do have designer brand shirts like these.. have a look at this tutorial at Designer on a Budget:

Look here at this super cute fabric flower! You can use this is many ways.. it even looks flat enough for use as scrapbook embellishments.

Get the tutorial at Pink Paper Peppermints!

These ribbon roses are stunning...I can imagine some of these beautiful ribbon roses attached to a headband or some hair clips. I think they would make very pretty hair accessories. You could custom make a ribbon rose hair accessory to match your formal on that special evening or what about maybe attaching it to a ribbon and making a choker?

Another t-shirt flower tutorial.. I love the "flutter effect" these flowers have.  You could also put these flowers around the neck of the shirt. These t-shirt fashions are very popular... it's awesome that you can make your own for a fraction of the price!

These singed edge organza flowers are so feminine and beautiful. These can be used as home decor, clothing embellishments, hair accessories, etc.. You really would be shocked how simple these are to make. There's nothing to it! See just how easy at the link below:

I fell in love with this belt.. how pretty is this?! At Rhonna Designs they suggest this for a Mothers Day gift and what mother would not LOVE to have this beautiful flower? It doesn't have to stay on a belt... What about making a slightly smaller version and attaching it to one of those crocheted headbands as gift for a baby girl..can you imagine the possibilities?

I love the look of these burlap flowers.. they have kind of a cute rustic look to them. This is a great tutorial. It shows you how to do a few different looks of the burlap flowers. Who'd have thought of making flowers out of burlap?? Go here to Tatertots and Jello and see how they do it:

These are pretty "rose-like" flowers from a tutorial at Snowy Bliss. In this tutorial she uses a sewing machine but if you do not have one you could use a fabric glue and then just do a decorative hand stitch around the edges or just use the glue. I am sure either way they will look great. These different prints of material look really nice together and sort of remind me of a quilt.  I love the country look.

Instructables is one of my favorite sites and look what I found... are these not precious?  I love the layered look of these flowers. You could put together all kinds of combinations.. like mix different prints as well as different type fabrics. You could also use a button or something else like that as an embellishment in the middle.  Wouldn't this be adorable pinned to a hat or worn as a brooch?

Ok... I know. Technically a zipper is not fabric but I couldn't help but add this to the list because it's so darned cute!! Did you ever think a zipper could look like this? Apparently it's not hard to make either. Have a look at this tutorial at Craftaholics Anonymous to learn how to make this beautiful flower out of a zipper- then add it to a bracelet (like shown) or headband, make it into a brooch... etc.. etc.. Possibilities are endless!

There you go... 10 fabric flower tutorials...Whatever look you are into as far as flowers go, you are bound to see something here that you would love to create. Just let your imagine take off and see where it goes. This is a low budget craft that yields beautiful results. You can use old fabric scraps to do this or you can get reduced price remnants from fabric stores. Also, with the small amount of material that is needed to make these flowers you don't have to buy alot of an expensive, beautiful fabric. I am sure about 1/4 yard will be enough for each of these projects depending on how many flowers you want to make. Good luck and Have fun!!
